I have chronic back pain. But there are many days that I feel like chronic back pain…has ME. When my pain first started, I would wait until the pain reduced significantly to do the things that I wanted to do. Now that my pain is with me every day, I have learned to take my pain WITH me to do the things I want to do (kinda like Dexter’s “dark passenger” hee hee). For example, yesterday I went to CrossFit knowing that we would be doing squat cleans. The old me would have quietly hit the cancel button on the app and said, “hopefully tomorrow’s workout is more my speed”. But instead of letting my pain and fear hold me back, I went to class, did lots of mobility beforehand and chose a MUCH lighter weight on the barbell than my ego would have liked. And you know what? I did it and it felt GOOD. My point is, keep going and find a way to do the things that make you happy. Think of this mantra – “If I can’t do it exactly as written, what CAN I manage to do?” We can still make progress toward our goals even if it doesn’t look EXACTLY like what everyone else is doing!
“If I can’t do it exactly as written, what CAN I manage to do?”
